Magistrates’ Mock Court Competition

Wolverhampton Crown Court was the venue on Saturday 3^rdMarch for the local heat of the Citizenship Foundation’s Mock Magistrate’s Court Trial 2012.

A well prepared group of Year 8 and 9 students took part firstly taking the role of the prosecution against a team from Heath Park. The performance of the prosecution team in the first heat was very impressive. Lauren Pugh kicked off proceedings as the legal advisor, followed by cross examinations, by the prosecution lawyers Katie Walker and Emily Brookes, of the witnesses played by Courtney Martin and Daniel Rowley. Presiding in both of the heats were the magistrates; Maninder Johal, Navina Shergill and Rumandeep Dhillon.

This was followed with the defence team’s turn this time against Bishop Milner School. Alex Holness, as the Usher, started the competition with a resounding “court rise!” and then it was the turn of the defence Lawyers Harveen Purewal and Danielle Walker to cross examine the defendant Ben Allsop and witness Alex Noakes.

The winners of the local heat were Wolverhampton Girls High but our pupils still managed the loudest cheer when being presented with their plaque.

All of the team put in 100% effort, commitment and determination to put on a polished performance which we can all be extremely proud of.

Well done to all who took part and a big thank you to Lauren Saville, Yr 13 for coaching the students so thoroughly and also to our staff and parent supporters who attended on the day.

Creative Curriculum Day

Mental and Physical challenge, Teamwork, Brain Training, Co-ordination, Leadership, Respect, Problem Solving. All were elements of a fantastic day of different activities and experiences for all of our students in years 8 – 11. Each form experienced six different tasks throughout the day and were marked according to different criteria. The response to all of the activities was brilliant. All of the students had a fun day and learned a lot about themselves and others in a creative environment. Well done! What a day!!

Year 7 – Towers 2011

During the first week back after half term Year 7 students went on the school’s annual visit to Towers Outdoor Education Centre in Wales. This is part of a team building exercise with Year 7 where they experience activities that rely on verbal communication skills and trust. Students can be seen undertaking the ‘Blind Trail’ wearing blackout visors and following the lead of the person in front to help guide them around the trail and back to safety. Other activities included tree climbing, rope and chain swings, zip wiring, abseiling and rock climbing. Follwing an exciting afternoon canoeing and kayaking students were allowed to have fun getting wet in the lake along with the Head of Year 7 Miss Sullivan.

Wednesfield High Diwali Extravaganza 2011

Wednesfield High School hosted its first Diwali show on the evening of November 3rd. The show kicked off with a bang as our students welcomed guests into the Lakefield Hall by playing the Dhol (Indian drums). This was followed by a spectacular fashion show, involving both staff and students modelling a mix of east and west couture. Miss Evans and Mr Hughes were the special guests in the show and helped create a fun and lively atmosphere.

Ben Devaney and Joe Morris introduced the event with an explanation of Diwali and how it is celebrated around the world. This was followed by a series of performances by our students, including Katie Walker, Emily Brookes, Megan Hill, Rosie Higgs, Megan Burke, Na Yong Park, Leah Cooper, Charlotte Murphy, Casey Weston, Varinder Dhinsa and Ayush Malik. Our brilliant food department served everyone with wonderful authentic snacks, including samosa, pakoras and of course Mr Singh’s delicious chicken curry!

We ended the show with a fantastic disco where everyone, including the guests, let their hair down! The evening was a complete success and was made possible only with the hard work and dedication of all the staff and students in the school.

Pride of Wolverhampton Awards Teacher of the Year

Congratulations go to Head of English Miss Ball. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year as the school achieved the best ever GCSE and “A; Level English results in the summer. She is young, talented and passionate teacher who goes above and beyond to secure student outcomes. A local girl who is also an ex-student of Wednesfield High School, she has the potential to be a successful Headteacher in the future. She is popular and well respected teacher by students and staff, her only shortcoming being that she is a major Wolves fan! Headteacher Claire Evans said “We are delighted that Vicky has received Teacher of the Year from Wolf Radio and In-comm Training and Business Services. All Staff and students agree that this is a well deserved award and I know that Vicky is very proud to have been nominated and subsequently awarded this prestigious accolade.” Miss Ball met with the X Factor winner Matt Cardle at the Award Ceremony which took place at the Molineux in October.

State of the Art Sports Facility has been unveiled at WHS.

Wolverhampton North East MP Emma Reynolds cut the ribbon to declare the school’s new sports hall, changing rooms and community entrance open. It also marked the completion of the first phase of the multi-million-pound transformation of the school. It began in April and has also seen the development of a new Performance Zone which includes a specialist teaching spaces for Music, Drama and PE. The school’s new dining room and sixth form base complete the first phase. The sports hall will serve the local community and Claire Evans, Headteacher said: “The new sporting facilities are state-of-the-art. They, along with the rest of the improvements which have already been carried out at our school, have been greeted enthusiastically by students, staff and visitors alike.”
